"Nice venue, interesting workshops, and an excellent opportunity to meet and learn from other grassroots groups."

“I came in expecting a great networking
opportunity, but that doesn't begin to describe how positive the
experience was for me. It was great talking to so many folks who are
so passionate about their causes, and sharing our story with them as
well.”

"I learned a lot and especially enjoyed talking to other activists about what they're doing.  All in all, an inspiring experience.  I'm proud to be involved with NEGEF"

OVERVIEW

The New England Grassroots Environment Fund's Grassroots Retreat was a day and a half event for leaders of grassroots groups that are building and maintaining healthy, just, safe and environmentally sustainable communities.  Grantees and colleagues came to relax, meet peers, and to be recognized and appreciated for their volunteerism, hard work and dedication to the health and wellbeing of many communities and reciprocate to their peers.

This year, NEGEF brought the retreat to the Geneva Point Conference Center in Moultonboro, NH, on Lake Winnipesaukee.  The weather was beautiful, and on Friday grantees took advantage of the lakefront and boating opportunties, the grantee reception and music, and the evening beach bonfire to rejuvenate and prepare for another year of grassroots work.  On Saturday, participants attended one of three workshops to build skills and work with other activists.  Many thanks to our workshop instructors, to staff at the Center, to our musicians, and most of of all to our grantees and colleagues for making this a successful event!

DAYLONG WORKSHOP MODEL

The NEGEF Grassroots Retreat offered three day-long trainings that allowed participants to really go into detail, ask questions, and learn skills.  Rather than touching upon several topics briefly, participants got to delve into one topic and interact extensively.  This '9 to 5' model allowed participants to make full use of each other as experts and resources.  The goal of the daylong workshop model is to offer maximum potential for resource-sharing among volunteers who work around the clock in their communities.
Below you will find short descriptions for each workshop and a video to give you a bit of the flavor of the day.

Make it Work!  Grow and Manage Your Cause for Maximum Impact
A hands-on, interactive exploration of key aspects to a successful organizing effort.  What does it mean to structure your work around realistic goals and strategies?  Are you effectively attracting and retaining volunteers?  How can you maintain momentum?  When will you know you've made a difference? You'll spend the day with your fellow organizers and Liz Sunde, a trainer who specializes in building and managing small social change organizations.  Part workshop/part clinic, this provocative, engaging experience will leave you with a management toolkit and customized action plan to steer your group toward success!  This will benefit both new organizations and experienced groups looking to improve their organizing and strategizing.

smartMeme
(www.smartmeme.org)
smartMeme will take you deeper into the thinking and processes behind your group's communication plan.  A story-based strategy brings the power of narrative to your issue, demonstrating new ways to engage your stakeholders and inspire your community.  smartMeme will discuss the role of language and story for organizations and campaigns, exploring different opportunities for communicating provocatively and effectively at multiple levels.  If you have ever struggled with explaining your issue in a compelling manner, then this workshop is for you!

Rockwood will present a one-day 'Art of Leadership' training to help you better understand the many forms of power, how you lead, communicate, collaborate, and present your organization's vision and purpose.  This session will delve into what it takes to be a successful leader. Rockwood will most benefit experienced activists and leaders looking to reflect and learn more about personal leadership.

MUSIC: WRITING A GRASSROOTS THEME SONG

Musician David Zee worked with a group of NEGEF grantees and colleagues on a Grassroots Theme Song. "The NEGEF Roots" presented four songs to the crowd after dinner on Friday: The Activism Blues, Neighbors in My Backyard, Tear Down the Walls, and Grow Grassroots Grow.

Participants voted on a favorite song, GROW THE GRASSROOTS GROW, that "The NEGEF Roots" will continue to perfect.

See each song as performed by the NEGEF Roots below:

EATING LOCAL

NEGEF staff in cooperation with Geneva Point Center made a concerted effort to find as many local ingredients for the Retreat meals as possible.  Assisted by Plymouth Area Renewable Energy Initative and Global Awareness Local Action, we found several local farmers and food producers to put together a delicious menu.  Geneva Point kitchen staff took care of the rest.

NEGEF also received food donations from Stonyfield Farms, Cabot Creamery, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, for which we are very grateful.  Find out more about local food by watching the video below.

TRAVELING GREEN

Friday September 28th was Walk/Ride Day for NEGEF Grantee Green Streets Initiative. Volunteers with Green Streets Initiative offered a challenge to all participants traveling to New Hampshire: How Green can you go?

Staff and grantees alike rose to the challenge by climbing on board the NEGEF Retreat Bus from Boston and Somerville, carpooling with people they'd never met, and combining carpooling and biking.  One participant even rode his bike back home to Burlington, Vermont!

HAVING FUN

We all work hard during the year, so an important part of the Retreat was having some fun and taking the time to relax and share our stories.  An open space session to allow participants to share their stories, a reception in the barn, musical entertainment after dinner, hanging out at the lake, and enjoying the evening bonfire were all part of the event.  We hope to welcome all of you at next year's event.  Stay tuned for more information!
